THE GIRL WITH PINK HAIR was inspired by my own breast cancer in 1991 when I was fortunate enough to have the medical insurance to pay for the bone marrow transplant that saved my life. Angela, a beautiful young African-American girl shared my hospital room. I learned that because her family lacked insurance, her diagnosis had been delayed until it was too late — her caner metastasized. Watching Angela die marked me forever, and led me and friends to create the Great Neck Breast Cancer Coalition (GNBCC) dedicated to raising awareness and fighting for breast cancer research. It also inspired me to write a film script in which a brave, spirited young woman like Angela has a transformative impact on a woman from a traditional, insulated world.
